DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) _ An Iowa congressman says the Pentagon has corrected a technicality that prevented some Iowa National Guard members from receiving their full educational benefits under the GI Bill.
Congressman Bruce Braley says the full benefits were initially denied because the soldiers' individual orders left them just days short of the 730 days of service required. The issue affected more than 3,700 soldiers in 34 states, including 575 Iowa Guard members who returned last summer from Iraq.
The Iowa soldiers are members of the 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry, based in northeast Iowa.
The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee began investigating the issue last fall at Braley's request. Braley said an investigation was necessary because the Army is typically slow to address its problems. Soldiers who qualify for the GI Bill can receive about $900 per month for educational expenses.
