Governor Rod Blagojevich has declared Rock Island County a disaster area.
Rock Island is one of seven counties the governor named a disaster area Friday. Others include Henderson and Mercer counties.
Disaster status allows the state to rush resources needed to fight flooding. In a letter to President Bush the governor also asked for direct federal assistance.
Illinois senators Barack Obama and Dick Durbin say they commend the governor's action and will work with him to secure the federal emergency funding.
