CHICAGO (AP) _ Authorities say the ambulance rushing a dying Chicago Marathon runner to the hospital got lost on the way.
Thirty-five-year-old Chad Schieber collapsed during the October Seventh race. An autopsy blamed his death on a heart condition.
The Niles ambulance that transported him was one of 30 suburban crews called to help when high temperatures sickened hundreds of runners.
Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford says the crew called dispatchers to report that Schieber was in full cardiac arrest, but there's no record of them calling for directions.
Niles Fire Chief Barry Mueller, however, contends the crew did radio for directions but got no response. He says they eventually got help from a Chicago ambulance. Langford and Mueller couldn't say how long it took to get Schieber to a hospital.
