DES MOINES, IA - Governor Culver signed a bill Friday in Des Moines that offers civil rights to gays and lesbians.
The state's civil code now recognizes sexual orientation as a protected category against discrimination. Iowa is the 18th state to guarantee civil rights to gays and lesbians.
Gay rights advocates call it a milestone. But some critics are afraid that it opens the door for arguments of equal protection under the law in areas like marriage.
