CBS4 is proud to be a long time supporter of Variety, The Children's Charity of Iowa. The 36th annual Variety Telethon was broadcast live from the Polk County Convention Complex in Des Moines on Saturday, March 6th and Sunday, March 7th. The telethon raised more than $3.2 million from volunteer donors across the state to continue the work Variety does in communities across Iowa and surrounding communities.
Variety's first telethon in 1975 raised $150,000 with all it going to Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines. Now 35 years later, Variety has raised over $70 million that has been granted to agencies serving children across the state of Iowa and here in western Illinois. Variety has also over 300 Sunshine Coaches on the road transporting children to new adventures.
Donations made from the Quad City area are returned here to help support local agencies serving the needs of children. These charities can apply for financial assistance on an annual basis, and their requests are put through an intensive review process to ensure that every dollar raised is used in the best way possible.
The generous contributions made by our community members make it possible for organizations to purchase new buildings, provide immunizations, and plan programs for special needs children. These programs help children with physical and mental disabilities, and those dealing with drug, alcohol, sexual, and physical abuse.
