CARROLL COUNTY - Officials in Carroll County say they're seeing a new twist on an old mail scam.
Authorities say the scam begins when you get a check worth up to $5,000 for winning a contest. A letter instructs you to deposit the check and send back half the money to pay for shipping costs for a bigger prize.
The problem is the check is fake, and when it doesn't clear, you end up owing the bank the money you sent out.
Authorities say most banks are familiar with this scam. If you get a check like that in the mail, forward it to the postal inspector's office.
