There's been a celebrity teacher at Rock Island's Thurgood Marshall School every Thursday for the past six weeks. He's Ultimate Fighting Challenge lightweight champ Jens Pulver.
Pulver has been teaching the teenagers the cardio and conditioning exercises he uses in his fight training. But, Pulver says he's teaching non-violence, not fighting. He says his exercises show students how to stay in shape.
Pulver was joined at the school Thursday by UFC heavyweight champ Tim Sylvia. Both men say they want to show young people in the school's troubled neighborhood that there's more to life than violence and hanging out on the streets. Instead, they can go to a gym, get some exercise, and feel good about themselves.
The classes are provided by Miletech Fighting Systems (http://mfselite.com/) and Champions Fitness Center of Bettendorf (www.champsfitness.com).
