Hundreds of cars lined up at the Quad City Family Life Church in Davenport Saturday morning to pick up free gas vouchers. According to Church leaders more than $2,000 was raised for the giveaway. They said with gas prices so high, they wanted to help families in need.
"I am a college student and this will help me so much," Tera Howard said.
"My kids go to daycare and I have to drop them off so I need help," she said.
Howard waited in line for hours to pick up a free voucher, but she said it was worth it. Howard ran out of gas just as she was leaving. However, with a gas can to the rescue, and vouchers in hand, Howard was able to get on her way.
"This is wonderful," she said. "It is very, very God blessing. I thank them so much."
It's people just like her that church leaders said they want to help.
"It makes me feel good when you get out here with the people you see the people really hurting we've had people here since 5 am this morning that wanted to get gas," Pastor Timothy Lee said.
Lee said he got the idea for the free vouchers a few months ago and donations from his congregation poured in. He said helping others is the perfect way to spend Easter weekend.
"Easter is all about Jesus' resurrection and his resurrection gave the world hope, that's why we call this the day of hope and even though we're not resurrecting them, we're helping them resurrect their gas tank a little bit," Lee said.
The gas vouchers can be used at any Shell Express Lane gas station. Church leaders said they hope to do more giveaways in the future.
