DUPO, Ill. (AP) - St. Clair County authorities say the honesty of a scrap metal dealer's clerk in Dupo have led to the arrest of 2 men who were allegedly stealing brass grave markers from a local cemetery warehouse.
Prosecutors say 36-year-old Brandon Ratterman and 26-year-old Jeramie Reddick, both of Columbia, traded 265 pounds of brass for $424 at B and R Recycling last Saturday, but the clerk realized after they were gone that the brass plates were grave markers. The business manager then called police, who arrested Ratterman and Reddick when they came in with another 841 pounds of brass on Monday.
Both were charged with theft over $500. Ratterman remained jailed on $50,000 bond Thursday, but Reddick was released Wednesday on $20,000 bond.
Police said the markers came from a cemetery in Millstadt and had been in storage when stolen.
