Questions have been raised about tornado sirens in the eastern Iowa city of Wilton. City leaders said at Monday's Wilton City Council meeting that they couldn't hear tornado sirens when there was a threat of a possible tornado.
Council member Steve Owens says he couldn't hear the siren at his house in northern Wilton. And former council member George Freeland said he couldn't hear the siren at his house in southern Wilton.
The council plans to make tornado sirens an agenda item for its meeting June 28. Mayor Ira Bowman says tornado sirens should be heard outside and may not be audible from inside buildings with closed windows and operating air conditioners.
The mayor says there has been talk of providing residents with weather radios that have alarms.
